Primary Source: Burger King Commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqdxbfzaSZg&feature=related

The above address is a link to the YouTube video of the new Burger King breakfast commercial. Airing a few months ago, this commercial targets men, and their unmatched love for food. This masculine centered commercial, uses different enticements like large size breakfast bowls, to attractive women. At the beginning of the commercial it shows a man getting directly out of bed and heading straight towards the nearest Burger King. This start to the ad implies that getting a big breakfast from BK should be the first an top priority of a man's day. As the commercial progresses more and more men from every job and place in the neighborhood, drop everything and file in line towards the call of breakfast. As the group marches on, the phrase, "I'm hungry, I'm hungry," keeps being repeated stronger and stronger. This emphasis is used as a technique to try to entice men, to realize their hidden hunger, and to rush to BK for a fulfilling meal.
The only break from the hoard of men that are filing out onto the streets is a short scene of an attractive woman hosing down her garden, while of course holding a sweet BK drink. Even though the men turn their heads, and a few even crash into objects from lack of attention, they continue to travel relentlessly towards the call of food. This is used to show that although an attractive women can keep our attention for a brief second, it has no comparison to the satisfaction that comes from a meal at BK. The final very interesting piece to this commercial is the man that jumps out of the two-story building just to join the group. Even though he clearly suffers injury from the jump he continues to limp forward. It can be inferred that even large amounts of pain cannot stop a man from attaining the heavenly meal that waits at BK. Did Burger King adequately entice and target the right audience, in order to sell the most it's product? How do you think Bk could change this ad to make it more appealing to the mind of men, or what things do you see left out, purposely, so no target audience is lost?

  1. I really like this primary source. I think the commercial is definitely trying to manipulate the minds of men. This commercial goes to great lengths to get men to believe that they need Burger King food in their life. The fact that it incorporates how food is more attractive then women relates it to our theme of "Breaking Down the Rhetoric of Love in Pop Culture." I think it would be interesting to research why Burger King chose to put so much more focus on a male audience. Are men more likely to want Burger King food? Are men more likely to fall for a commercial's trick? I think this commercial brings up many good questions.
