I chose the Dentyne Ice commercial that has recently come out because it alludes to the idea of sex appeal the entire time. I decided to just focus on the first 19 seconds of the commercial. In the beginning of the commercial it starts out with a shot of a typical sedan style car that is sitting out in the middle of a dark and empty road during a rainy night. The scene then flashes to a man and a women in the back of a car and they look like they are about to start engaging in sexual contact, then the women stops and says “Wait, you have something right?” and the man replies, “Oh of course.” This the impression that she is referring to a condom, and that they are going to be having sex, but then the man pulls out his pack of Dentyne Ice. Another thing I noticed was that both the man and the women are wearing dark clothes, it is dark outside, and there isn’t a lot of light in the frame. In contrast when the man pulls out his Dentyne Ice it is bright blue that seems to be radiating light. This marketing technique accentuates the irony between condoms and the Dentyne Ice gum and further intensifies the connection that is being made between condoms and Dentyne Ice. In the second scene there is a man in a convenience store looking at something in the isle, and then he looks around nervously as someone walks by. He looks back down at the thing he is holding it shows that it is Dentyne Ice, then the man walks up to the checkout counter and glances behind him before he sets the gum to be checked out. The cashier looks at the gum and then continues to look up with a half smile that implies she knows what he is up to that evening. The man proceeds to awkwardly smile and look around nervously. The looks around play on the readers pathos and make you also feel awkward, as one would look if they were to be buying condoms. This commercial is suggesting that chewing Dentyne Ice will bring you love and sex through their use of sexual appeal and buying Dentyne Ice bringing you risky activities that night.
