Primary Source: Miller Lite Girlfriend

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zil1j9S0Oe8

The address above is a link to yet another Youtube video, this one about a man's love for his beer. As one could gather from watching the video, it begins with a young couple appearing to be strongly in love. He speaks of how much better is life is now that he has found "the one," and the viewer assumes he is talking about the beautiful woman next to him. The plain setting of the commercial is used to draw ur attention to the couple in the middle. Now that the commercial has your focus on the romantic love story that is unraveling on the screen, he unveils that the love the man is taking about is actually his MIller Lite. The girl, thinking it was her the whole time obviously leaves, which leads to a key factor in the commercial.
The whole theme of the commercial is to play on the assumption that a true loving relationship cannot provide as much happiness as a material item, in this case Miller Lite. A very important part of this commercial is the very end of the commercial. As u notice the woman leaves after hearing the man is in love with his beer. The importance of this is the man's state of inaction to go after her and try to get her back. It is implied that he still wants to be with her, but it is not important enough to forget out his Miller Lite. This shows that he wants, but does not need, a relation with the woman, but between the two, easily chooses his beer. Why do you think that companies have a constant target on the fragility of human relationships? Do you think that targeting relationships because they are easily swayed, suggests that America or the world, even, have placed a lower value on true love and human intimacy?

  1. I really like this primary source. I definitely think you should do this one for your paper. There is so much to work with in this commercial. The man obviously shows his priorities in life here. The commercial plays on our emotions and makes us think that humans cannot be as satisfying as the beer. It relates to our topic of "Breaking Down the Rhetoric of Love in Pop Culture" because it shows that people often love objects more than they love other people.
