Lyrics to "Mine" by Taylor Swift: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/taylor_swift/mine.html

The song "Mine" by Taylor Swift begins by describing the beginnings of a relationship between a teenage boy and girl. The song is from the point of view of the young girl. During the first stages of the relationship she is "Wonderin' why we bother with love if it never lasts." This seems to be because she has issues with previous abandonment. As the song progresses, so does the relationship between the boy and girl. The girl begins referring to the boy as "the best thing that's ever been mine." They begin taking on bigger challenges together and the boy tells the girl that "we'll never make your parents mistakes." This leads the listener to believe that the abandonment the girl struggles with stems from her parents. Much later in the relationship, the now man and woman get into a big fight, and the woman just assumes that the man is going to leave her like her parents. She says, "Brace myself for the goodbye" because she thinks the relationship is about to end which would leave her all alone. But then the man hugs her and says "I'll never leave you alone." The man and the woman now believe that their relationship is strong enough to make it through anything.

This song can be very inspiring for teens who have had failed relationships or have been abandoned by loved ones in the past. Would this be the effect on every one of these teens or would some consider this to be more of a fairytale situation? Could this song have a negative effect on a teen who was a recent victim of abandonment?

  1. Great analysis on this song by Taylor Swift. I like the questions you present at the end of your blog post. This could be a very good place to start for your primary source analysis. I also think it would be interesting as you stated to find out whether young people view this song as a fairytale or if they believe it's possible.

  2. This song was a really good one for this project! I also used a Taylor Swift song, so it's interesting to see the similarities and differences. I agree with Matt about the questions at the end. They really make you think and reflect back on what you just read. I don't think that I have actually ever heard the song, but I know that I've seen the quote "you're the best thing that's ever been mine" as statuses on Facebook many times, so that definitely shows how big of an audience a song can reach and affect.
