Splawinski: Won't You Stay - Talib Kweli

These lyrics are from the song “Won’t You Stay” by the rapper Talib Kweli, from his 2002 album, Quality. The song describes a relationship between the narrator, Kweli, and a woman, who seems to be significant to Kweli. The chorus, sung by Kendra Ross, depicts that when they are not with each other, they become lonely and things are only right when they are together. At the beginning, Kweli seems to be caught up in the girl, and the girl does not seem to be reciprocating the feelings, but he is not discouraged. Later, he describes the turmoil that a serious relationship can bring about, but he still argues it is worth the trouble. There is a bridge in the song where Kweli repeats that he has to leave, but heading into his last verse, he details the relationship as something truly unparalleled and the love as “no greater rush."

  1. I like this primary source because it shows an opposite view of most other people's sources. It is portraying love as something that should be worked for and cherished. This view is not often seen in society today. I think a good question for this source would be "Can people see past the ads and commercials that portray love as something bad and still believe that true love exists?
